Ukiah Unified School
District Faces Significant Budget Challenges
All throughout the State
school districts are making difficult decisions to close schools or to
consider closing schools in order to address their budget deficits. In
addition to school closures, school communities are also realizing that,
in some cases, programs and services will also need to be reduced or
eliminated as well to meet the objective of staying financially solvent
in order to continue providing a strong instructional program.
The downturn in our State and national
economy has impacted families and businesses in our own community
leaving some without homes and jobs. The Ukiah Unified School District
has been especially hard hit having lost nearly $1,500 per student in
funding in the past two years. The State has changed laws allowing
schools to reduce their school year and eliminate dozens of programs
because districts will receive less funding. As we evaluate options on
how to remain fiscally solvent, we are ever mindful that our mission is
to educate.
